On Friday 10 September, four of our Year 6 went into Sale Moor village to witness the unveiling of a blue plaque to George Mottershead. George was the founder of Chester Zoo and was born and lived in the local area. His daughter Joan recently wrote a book about her father’s life and times and from this book, the BBC has made a dramatised series called ‘Our Zoo’.
Joan very kindly posed for photos with our children and was keen to find out what they knew about her father and his work. The children wanted animals to be represented at the unveiling as they were so close to George’s heart.
The vast crowds were swelled by local councillors, including The Mayor of Trafford.
The blue plaque can be now seen by all passers by and is a fantastic reminder of George Mottershead’s achievements. The children, and indeed all the visitors, had a most enjoyable morning.Joan Mottershead unveils the plaque The children infront of the blue plaque Blue Plaque
